The Buick Wildcat was, like the Marauder, a great mix of luxury and speed. In its final year it could be powered by the 455 ci Buick V8, the most powerful domestic engine until 1992, which boasted a staggering 510 lbs/ft of torque. It also came with a dizzying array of standard equipment, from vinyl bucket seats to dual exhaust. The 1962 model was also pleasantly speedy, with 0-60 being achieved in just 8.1 seconds, and a quarter-mile in 17 seconds.

Sales weren’t terrible, but like the Marauder X-100, it failed to capitalize on where the market was going: away from full-size, and towards intermediates. What was once an engine option on the Invicta, before becoming a superb successor in its own right, just misjudged the way the market was going and that was its shortcoming. It’s never really been able to recoup its original popularity since.
