Mercury Cyclone

Years produced: 1964-1971

The Mercury Cyclone, brother to the Ford Fairlane, doesn’t get nearly as much attention as it deserves. As well as looking absolutely killer, it’s also extremely quick: a 1969 model tested by Car & Driver went up to 60 from a standing start in 5.5 seconds. Powered by a range of V8s that stretched up to 429 ci, the Cyclone was Mercury’s entry-level racer. While it was a premium alternative to Ford’s Fairlane, it’s quite a bit cheaper today, and well worth considering, thanks to a tantalizing mix of premium (for the day) fittings and power.

It never really sold all that well in its day either, with just over 74000 being produced in its seven-year lifespan. Mercury may not call to mind the same kind of imagery that Ford, Chevrolet, or Dodge are able to, but the Cyclone is handy in its own right, striking a good balance between speed and usability.
