Pontiac Grand Prix (First Generation)

Years produced: 1961-1968

Like so many other great names, the Pontiac Grand Prix aged into mediocrity, but it wasn’t always like that. Indeed, the first generation Pontiac Grand Prix was a beautiful full-size, powered by V8s that ranged in power from 389-428 ci, and gave the weighty sedan great performance. The 428 provided 390 horsepower, and let the luxurious sedan drift up to 60 in an excellent 6.5 seconds. Like the 2+2, it was based on the Pontiac Catalina, and served to replace the old Ventura.

The Pontiac Grand Prix came in like a storm with a heap of then-mindblowing tech, including automatic AC, walnut trim, and an optional four-speed manual transmission. It’s not for nothing that it was Motor Trend’s Car of the Year for 1965. When the second generation rolled around in 1968, the full-body shape disappeared, with the Grand Prix moving into the realm of mid-size to capitalize on the market. While a sharp move, there’s a lot to be said for a huge, fast, stylish car like the first-gen Grand Prix.
