Studebaker Avanti

The Studebaker Avanti is a really interesting piece. Eschewing the conventional hallmarks of 1960s American car design in favor of something far more Italian. Looking like something Fiat would have produced, the Avanti pulled luxury and speed together in a tight little package. The car broke 29 (count ’em) records at Bonneville, thanks to its 240 horsepower V8, with a displacement of 289 ci that let supercharged versions hit 168 mph. Boasting fiberglass panels and licensed copies of Dunlop disc brakes at the front, the Avanti was far ahead of its time, not only in design terms.

Unforunately, Studebaker wasn’t long for this world. Their financial situation, already bad, declined even further in 1963 and the company closed their South Bend factory in December of that year. That was pretty much it for the Avanti, at least in mainstream production. Two South Bend Studebaker dealers bought the rights to the name and produced them in small numbers for several decades after.
