Poor AMC. From the Pacer to the Javelin to the Hornet, they didn’t have a whole lot of luck in the industry in the 70s. The Hornet was an interesting machine. Though many will remember it as the first compact hatchback, it’s worth remembering the SC/360, which mated a 360 ci V8 with a compact body to create something truly superb. It handled far better than a muscle car would be expected to, and was able to roar up to 60 mph in under seven seconds.

AMC had expected to make 10,000 of these little devils, but in the end just 784 made it out of the factory gates. Of this, it’s estimated that fewer than 100 are still around. It was a strange little machine that really did do something quite special, preempting the hot hatch movement by years. If the Volkswagen Golf GTI is the gold standard for European hot hatches today, this was the gold standard for their American cousins of the 1970s.
