Ford Torino Cobra

The Ford Torino Cobra is a weird one. It was a prime muscle car in its day, going head to head with the more-traditionally sporty Plymouth Superbird in 1970. Nowadays however, it’s been trampled into the depths of our memory by a veritable herd of Pony Cars and European racers. Now, this is wrong for a couple of reasons. It was one of the kings of racing back in the day, packing a massive 429 Cobra Jet engine, producing 370 horsepower.

Named for the Italian city of Turin, this was a car that wanted to do it all and, while not quite perfect, came close. It was powerful, it was fast, and utterly mad. Sure, the suspension wasn’t all it could be (going over 80 mph can make you feel like you’re riding an atom bomb, ala Dr. Strangelove,) and any idea of economy would fly out of the window, but it’s one of the finest muscle cars ever made. It not being remembered in the same breath as the Mustang and the Charger is a tragedy.
